We opted for a sea-taxi trip to Nevis to tour the island since we had recently visited St. Kitts.
Nevis is the sister island to St. Kitts. From St. Kitts, we hopped on a sea-taxi ride and caught a glimpse of wild dolphins in their natural wonder as they crossed the Caribbean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean. We viewed the island’s slumbering volcano rising 3232ft into the clouds as we arrived into Charlestown, the capital, one of the remaining examples of the colonial era where building have maintained their Georgian architectural designs.
Next we stopped at the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, where he lived until he was 9 years old. The building is now used as a Museum of Nevis History and Nevis House of Assembly. Our next stop was the historic Bath Hotel, built in 1778, which was once a playground for the rich and famous such as Lord Nelson, Samuel Taylor, and Prince William Henry who came to Nevis to take in the therapeutic, hot spring baths.
We then visited The Artisan Village where local arts and crafts were made and sold. The next stop was the St Thomas Anglican Church, built in 1643 and located on a hillside with views of neighboring islands. We drove through sleepy villages with homes surrounded by tropical gardens and looked out for monkey crossing signs along the road as the vervet monkeys have become integrated into the everyday life of island living. Pinney’s Beach was our final stop for a Caribbean lunch. Afterwards, we relaxed on lounge chairs under an umbrella after lunch and then navigated Pinney’s Beach, four miles of volcanic golden sand and home to many popular beach bars.
