Alas, today marks our last day in Egypt. We flew from Hurghada along the Red Sea to Cairo, where we were greeted at the airport and taken on our final tour of Coptic Egypt.
Coptic Egypt refers to the period when Christianity flourished in Egypt, particularly after its introduction in the 1st century AD by Saint Mark. The Copts, originally the indigenous Egyptians, developed a distinct identity centered around the Coptic Orthodox Church, known for its unique language, religious practices, and art.
Coptic culture thrived particularly in the 4th and 5th centuries, contributing significantly to Christian theology and monasticism, with notable institutions like the Monastery of Saint Anthony. Though Copts faced challenges during the Islamic conquests starting in the 7th century, they have maintained their cultural and religious identity, continuing to celebrate unique traditions and practices in Egypt today.
After exploring various Greek Orthodox churches and a synagogue, we arrived at our hotel, The Hilton Grand Nile, for our final night in the stunning city of Cairo.
